Sixth Grade Language Arts Classes at Summit Parkway focus on the English/Language Arts Standards for South Carolina. The Language Arts Standards focus on reading, word study, various forms of writing, and process, research, and oral communication. Sixth Grade Honors Language Arts Students in this class should be able to move at a rapid pace and should be motivated to complete assignments. Students are placed in Honors Language Arts classes based on set district criteria. Seventh Grade Language Arts Classes at Summit Parkway focus on the English/Language Arts Standards for South Carolina. The Language Arts Standards focus on reading, word study, the writing process and writing forms, research, and oral communication. The goal for all students is to successfully master the Language Arts Standards as they prepare for the next grade. Seventh Grade Honors Language Arts Students in honors language arts should be able to move through course work at a rapid pace and enjoy reading. Eighth Grade Language Arts Classes at Summit Parkway focus on the SC State English/Language Arts Standards. The Language Arts Standards focus on reading, writing, communication, and research with an emphasis on reading comprehension fluency, and higher order thinking skills. Classes read various genres consisting of novels, short stories, poetry, and plays within various units of study. Primary focal points include reading comprehension, fluency, and higher order thinking skills. The goal for all students is to successfully master the standards as they prepare for high school. Eighth Grade Honors Language Arts Students will complete rigorous coursework within thematic units. Students who complete this program will be well-prepared for Honors English in high school.
Sixth Grade Science The curriculum incorporates the South Carolina State Science Standards. Units of study include the following: Inquiry, Physical Properties and Changes of Matter, Forms and Transfer of Energy, Energy Transfer in the Atmosphere, Machines and Work, Skeletal and Muscular Systems, and Fungi and Plants. Laboratory experiences are integrated throughout each unit with a focus on process skills, the scientific methods, and the collecting, displaying and analysis of data. Sixth Grade Honors Science The honors science curriculum includes additional activities in the area of science exploration. Seventh Grade Science Life Science is the focus of the seventh grade curriculum. In the spring semester, research and presentation skills are demonstrated through the students’ Health Fair projects. Topics of study include science process skills, kingdoms, cells and microscopes, systems of the human body, reproductive health, and properties of air, water, and soil. Seventh Grade Honors Science Honors science classes extend the opportunities for students to apply concepts and skills in a wider range of opportunities. Eighth Grade Science: Earth Science Eighth graders will be required to complete a Science Fair Project, which will include an abstract paper, a display board, and “the investigation.” A display of these projects will be open for family viewing. Winners from the Fair will be eligible to compete in the regional science fair. Sixth Grade Pre-Algebra 6: Sixth grade standards will be covered in this grade level course. Students will have the opportunity to explore new concepts through a variety of experiences. These students will be prepared for Algebra 1 in the ninth grade.
Sixth Grade Advanced Pre-Algebra 6: Students in this course should be solid math students who are motivated to learn new material, complete homework on a regular basis, and learn new material without extended practice. Students will move through the content area at a fast pace. Sixth grade and half of seventh grade standards will be covered in this class.
Sixth Grade Honors Pre-Algebra: Students in this course should be self-motivated workers who have strong computational skills and are able to move at an exceptionally fast pace, grasping new concept quickly. Students will be prepared for Algebra 1 after successful completion of this course. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade standards will be covered in this class.

Seventh Grade Advanced Pre-Algebra 7: Students in this course should have successfully completed Advanced Pre-Algebra 6. The seventh grade standards will be completed in this course, as well as the second half of eighth grade standards.
Seventh Grade Algebra 1: Students who have successfully completed sixth, seventh, and eighth grade standards in the Honors Pre-Algebra course will complete this course for high school credit. The grade for this course will be counted in the high school grade point average and SC high school uniform grading laws and procedures will apply. A state-wide end-of-course test, counting 20% of the final grade, is administered in early May.
Eighth Grade Mathematics Eighth Grade Pre-Algebra 8: Eighth grade standards will be covered in this grade level course. Students will have the opportunity to explore new concepts through a variety of experiences. These students will be prepared for Algebra 1 in the ninth grade or Algebra I Part I in the ninth grade and Algebra II Part II in the tenth grade.
Eighth Grade Advanced Pre-Algebra 8: Students in this course should have successfully completed either pre-algebra 7 or advanced pre-algebra 7. The eighth grade standards and some Algebra I standards are completed in this course. This course extends the opportunity to apply concepts and skills in greater depth. These students will be prepared for Algebra I in the ninth grade.
Eighth Grade Algebra I: Students who have successfully completed 8th grade standards in Advanced Pre-Algebra 6 and 7 will complete this course for high school credit. A state-wide end of course test, counting 20% of the final grade, is administered in early May. Eighth Grade Honors Geometry: Students who have successfully completed standards in the pre-algebra course and have successfully completed Algebra 1 will complete this course for high school credit. The grade for this course will be counted in the high school grade point average and South Carolina high school uniform grading laws and procedures will apply.
Sixth Grade Social Studies: Ancient Cultures to the 1600’s Social Studies is about the development of civilizations. We begin with the ancient civilizations of Sumer and Egypt around the time of 2000 BC and continue until the end of the Reformation around the mid-1500’s AD. During the course, we cross the lands of the Ancient Mayans to the Ancient Indians, explore the rulers of Ancient Egypt through the Middle Ages, and follow the trade routes of the West Africans and the Silk Road. Following the SC Social Studies Standards, information focuses on history through the study of people and events before the era of European exploration and settlement. Sixth Grade Honors Social Studies This course incorporates the South Carolina Social Studies Standards and is aligned with the National/ State Gifted Standards. Areas of critical and creative thinking, interpersonal communication, technical literacy, and research applications are integrated throughout the social studies curriculum. Seventh Grade Social Studies: Contemporary Cultures - 1600 - Present These classes are developed around the South Carolina Curriculum Standards and cover dates from 1600 to the present. There is an emphasis on world history and cultures, as well as how history impacts our lives today. Students will study changes that have occurred in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americans from 1600 to the present. Quarterly projects, that reflect the content being studied, will be assigned. Seventh Grade Honors Social Studies The Honors Social Studies curriculum is designed to cover and extend the SC Social Studies Standards as well as to emphasize technological literacy, research skills, critical thinking, and both independent and team problem solving. Eighth Grade Social Studies: South Carolina and the United States In the 8th grade Social Studies curriculum, students examine the major developments in the history of the United States and South Carolina from the earliest human settlements through Reconstruction. Studies include the basic principles of American democracy, the United States Constitution, and the economic ideas that under gird our society. Students will have a greater understanding of the history of South Carolina and the role the people and state have played in the development of the United States. Eighth Grade Honors Social Studies The Honors curriculum for eighth grade includes units that align with the South Carolina Social Studies Standards. The Standards are written for South Carolina and the United States from earliest times to the era of Populism and include the following: I. Time, Continuity and Change: History; II. Power, Authority and Governance: Government/Political Science; III. People, Places and Environments: Geography; IV. Production, Distribution and Consumption: Economics. Research, technology, and critical thinking skills are integral to the curriculum.
